Pattison’s Latest Acquisition in Western Canada
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Limited Partnership (Pattison) and Merritt Broadcasting Ltd. (Merritt) today jointly announced Pattison’s acquisition of Merritt Broadcasting Ltd. and it’s associated radio station licence (and related assets) for Q101, located in Merritt, BC, following approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
In awarding approval, the Commission also granted Pattison an exception to the Common Ownership Policy, permitting Pattison to own and control 3 FM presences in the Merritt market, subject to certain conditions of licence. The Commission is of the view that such an exception is in the public interest and consistent with the objectives of the Broadcasting Act, the Common Ownership Policy and the Diversity of Voices Policy (Broadcasting Public Notice 2008-4), since it would maintain this small market’s already limited diversity of programming. The current local programming team will all be offered employment and continue to produce distinct programming for the Merritt marketplace. With the transfer of ownership and control to Pattison, Leo Baggio of Kamloops will oversee the operation as General Manager in addition to his duties in Kamloops.
Elizabeth Laird, the current General Manager and owner of Q101 announced the decision today stating, “We’re excited that the decision from the CRTC is approved and is now allowing us to complete the sale of Q101 Merritt Broadcasting Ltd., to The Pattison Broadcast Group. It has been an honour to serve Merritt and the Nicola Valley for 26 years as a family business and are extremely happy to be able to turn the reins over to another Family company that believes in the importance of serving their communities.”
Rod Schween, Jim Pattison Broadcast Group’s President commented, “We’re very excited to have this opportunity to grow into another market that complements our other Western Canadian radio and television stations. It will be our Broadcast division’s focus to continue to super serve the advertisers, listeners and community in Merritt, just as they have come to expect and enjoy from the Laird family. We appreciate that in making this decision, the Commission recognizes our commitment to community and locally focused programming.”
The sale is expected to close on December 31st. This sale follows the successful recent Pattison acquisitions in 2018 of 4 stations from Fabmar Communications along with the 2015 purchase of CIKT-FM Grande Prairie, AB from Bear Creek Broadcasting and stations in Edmonton, AB, Prince Albert, North Battleford and Meadow Lake, SK from Rawlco Radio.
This grows Pattison’s radio footprint as they will own and operate 45 FM, 3 AM radio stations in Western Canada, along with 17 online news portals, 3 conventional television stations and 1 outdoor video signage division.
